$(\log_a M)^r$ and $r \log_a M$:

The power rule states $\log_a M^r = r\log_a M$, but $(\log_a M)^r$ raises the whole logarithm to the power $r$, which is different. The two are equal only in special cases (e.g. $r=1$), so in general they may not be equal.
